Urban Glitch is a VR game for participatory design aiming to facilitate the architectural design of public spaces with experience-based user input.
Design
The ambition behind this project was to map and animate the individual spatial desires of users in order to utilize them towards architectural design proposals for public/semi-public space. Virtual Reality and serious games were merged into the proposed platform and explored as alternative means of approaching participatory design.
The public space of an estate building complex in East London was 3D scanned and accurately reconstructed as the Game's base environment. The payers were handed building blocks of different functionalit and were asked to express their design intent by placing the modules around the public space. - The game was developped for the Oculus DK2 and was played with and X-box 360 controller. - 65 users partcipated in the experiments that were conducted over 4 days.
The user data were collected, processed and passed on -through a visualization app- to architects in the form of a design competition investigating how experts would utilize this new format of design intent.
