States of Growth is a project developed in collaboration with Studio Above&Below. It explores a kind of computational growth that is triggerered by EEG electroencephalogram data.

Project Description

Design

Inspired by the very nature of the brain, with its relentless process of generation and destruction of synaptic connections, we developed a 3-dimensional version of the Differential Lattice algortihm: Inside an imaginary vat, a dense collection of neuron-like agents in turbulent motion, continuously reconfigure their connections, forming complex, volatile 3D networks.

The lattice networks are then imprinted onto a volumetric density field, with regions of high connectivity resulting in voxels of high density. This digital ‘grey matter’ is finally passed into our Marching Cubes algorithm, which consolidates it into an agile polygonal surface always in motion.
