Little planets is a photogrammetry experiment. A test location in London was manually 3D scanned and digitally reconstructed, aiming to create a realistic background environment for a Virtual Reality public experience.
Design
The scanned location is the Public Square on Phoenix & Stacey Street in central London. A set of 650 photos were taken and imported in the appropriate photogrammetry software, where both the point cloud as well as the 3D mesh of the location were accurately reconstructed. The mesh geometry was then simplified and used as the context geometry for a Google cardboard VR application for mobile phones.
